A number of Llanelli AC juniors kicked off their outdoor seasons in style at the first junior Youth Development League meet in Yate at the start of this month. Conditions were temperamental but not even a spell of rain in the afternoon could dampen spirits, as 11 athletes made the journey to the west country to represent the club in a range of events. One of the standout performers was Bryn Lawlor who, after recovering well from an early stumble to finish second in the 100m, ran a controlled and well paced 300m to win the A string race in 39.19 seconds, later forming part of a strong U16 boys relay squad that finished 2nd. Mayah Adejuwon, competing on the track outdoors for the very first time, ran 13.61 in the 100m, a time that put her in the top 10 in Wales for U14 girls. It was also a successful day for fellow U14 athlete Hannah James, who set big new personal bests in all three of her events and crossed some key performance milestones. Harrison Sheehan represented the club for the first time and had a busy day, collecting valuable points in the 200m, 800m and long jump, as well as forming part of the relay quartet. Club athlete Elin Edwards was also in attendance, travelling to Yate to cheer on those who were competing. The day’s action was concluded with the relays, with the U16 girls battling to the line to finish 3rd, before the 2nd place finish for the boys, anchored home by Carter Griffiths, who also ran two strong individual races on his return from injury. The calendars are already marked for May 31st when athletes will return to Yate for the second YDL meet of the season.
